Welcome to Espresso Decoded.
If you’ve ever spent 20 minutes dialing in a shot only to end up with espresso that tastes sour, bitter, watery, or completely different from what you expected, you’re in the right place.
Espresso can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be frustrating. Grind size, dose, yield, shot time, roast level, and equipment can all affect what ends up in the cup, and the amount of conflicting advice online doesn’t always make things easier.
That’s why I created Espresso Decoded.
Practical Espresso Advice for Home Baristas
My goal is simple: make espresso easier to understand.
Espresso Decoded focuses on practical, beginner-friendly guides that help home baristas diagnose problems, understand what’s happening during extraction, and make better adjustments without getting lost in unnecessary jargon.
Some good places to start are:
- Under-Extracted vs. Over-Extracted Espresso
- Espresso Shot Time: How Long Should an Espresso Shot Take?
- Espresso Grind Size Explained
- What Is Crema?
You’ll also find guides covering espresso troubleshooting, brewing ratios, equipment, and common problems like sour, bitter, and watery shots.
Who’s Behind Espresso Decoded?
I’m Andres, the founder of Espresso Decoded and a home espresso enthusiast.
Like a lot of home baristas, I learned by experimenting: changing grind settings, adjusting ratios, timing shots, tasting the results, and figuring out which changes actually made a difference.
I currently use a Turin DF54 grinder at home, and the recommendations on Espresso Decoded are based on the same practical approach I use when making espresso myself.
The goal here isn’t to make espresso sound complicated. It’s to help you understand why a shot tastes the way it does and what you can change to make the next one better.
How We Approach Recommendations
When Espresso Decoded recommends a product, the goal is to suggest equipment that is genuinely useful for making better espresso.
Some links on the site are affiliate links, which means Espresso Decoded may earn a commission if you purchase through them, at no additional cost to you.
Affiliate relationships do not determine what products are recommended.
Keep Experimenting
Espresso is part science, part skill, and part experimentation.
There isn’t always one perfect recipe, grinder setting, or shot time. What matters most is understanding the variables well enough to make intentional adjustments and find what tastes best to you.
Thanks for visiting Espresso Decoded.
Happy brewing,
Andres
